Week Four Rams Report

Buffalo Bills 31  St. Louis Rams 14

It was a game that featured an undefeated Bills team and a Rams team looking for not only their first win, but their true identity.  This would be the first game after Rams head coach Scott Linehan had demoted starting quarterback Marc Bulger in favor of the veteran Trent Green.  Buffalo came in looking for their first 4-0 start since 1992.

Things started out well for the Rams despite giving up a 45 Yard Rian Lindell field goal on the Bills first drive of the game giving Buffalo a 3-0 lead.  The Rams would answer right back with a 5 play 67 yard drive that was capped off by a Donnie Avery 37-yard touchdown run giving St. Louis a 7-3 lead.  Later in the 1st quarter, Buffalo would take advantage of great field position set up by a Fred Jackson 35 yard punt return to the St. Louis 29 yard line.  Despite running 9 plays within the Rams 30, the Bills could only muster 12 yards, setting up another field goal for Lindell, this one being from 35 yards out.  The first quarter came to an end with the Rams leading 7-6 and with possesion.  The Rams extended their lead when Steven Jackson found paydirt on a 29 yard touchdown run and later did a "Lambeau Leap" into the first row of the stands.  The Rams defense was extremely tough on the Bills offense.  Buffalo was held to only 98 first half yards.  Trent Edwards had thrown an interception and was sacked twice.  This helped the Rams take a 14-6 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.

The Rams however, would totally Collapse in the second half.  The Buffalo Bills would score on the first drive of the 3rd quarter on a Fred Jackson 22 yard run which was the only score of the period.  Eventhough the Rams took a 14-13 lead into the 4th quarter, the Bills would score 25 unanswered points.  The Bills took the lead on a Jabari Greer 33 yard interception return touchdown and never looked back.  The Bills scored another touchdown on a Lee Evans 39 yard touchdown reception and a Rian Lindell 45 yard field goal.

Noteworthy about Trent Green.  His play at the quarterback position was ok.  He completed 17 passes o 32 attempts for 236 yards.  He didn't throw any touchdowns and had an interception that was returned by the Bills for the game winning touchdown in the 4th quarter.  I really don't think that benching your best quarterback for a 38 year old quaterback is a smart thing to do.  He is always one hit away from the morgue when he drops back to pass.

Rams Player of the Game

Steven Jackson had a great game despite losing.  Jackson finished with 110 yards rushing on 24 attempts with a touchdown and had 5 receptions for 78 yards.

Buffalo Bills @ St. Louis Rams Week 4 Preview

(3-0) Bufalo Bills @ (0-3) St. Louis Rams 3:05 PM

At the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis the Bills come rolling in at first place atop the AFC East.  That in itself is remarkable, but the Bills are looking to go (4-0) for the first time since 1992.  Lead by head coach Dick Jauron, the Bills feature a great running game, a very tough defense, and a game-changing special teams.

Much news was already made for the Rams this week as head coach Scott Linehan had demoted starting quarterback Marc Bulger in favor of Trent Green.  Linehan has placed blame on the poor play of Marc Bulger being the reason to a struggling offense that is averaging 9.7 points per game which is 31st in the league.  Only the Cleveland Browns are worse at 8.7 points per game.

Earlier in the week Torry Holt came out and said that the offensive line has to do a better job of blocking for Bulger and creating running room for Steven Jackson.  With everyone pointing the finger at everyone, Linehan has made a decision to switch quarterbacks.  Bulger signed a $65 million dollar deal before the start of the 2007 season.  That is one hell of an expensive backup QB.  Then Linehan decided to cut Fakhir Brown whom was one of the better coverage cornerbacks the Rams had.  Ronald Bartell will take his place in the starting lineup.  Then there is the developing situation with Torry Holt.  According to InsideSTL.com, Scott Linehan is trying to trade or release wide receiver Torry Holt stating that their relationship is at the point in which they hate each other.  Remember back to last year's Thursday Night Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in which the cameras showed Torry Holt and coach Linehan arguing back at each other.  What is the Coach thinking really?  He benches his best QB infavor of a washed up Trent Green.  He cuts his best coverage corner back, and now wants to get rid ofTorry Holt?

The Matchups

When Buffalo has the ball...

Buffalo features the 11th ranked passing offense (234 YPG) against the Rams' 30th ranked passing defense (272 YPG).

On the ground the Bills have the 23rd ranked rushing offense (99 YPG) against the Rams' 29th ranked rushing defense (184 YPG).

Buffalo averages 26 PPG (ranked 9th) while St. Louis gives up 38 PPG which is ranked dead last.

When St. Louis has the ball...

St. Louis features the 27th ranked passing offense (146 YPG) against the Bills' 6th ranked passing defense (153 YPG).

On the ground the Rams have the 32nd ranked rushing offense (56 YPG) against the Bills' 12th ranked rushing defense (93 YPG).

St. Louis averages 9.7 PPG (ranked 31st) and Buffalo allows 16.3 PPG (ranked 6th).

Prediction

Buffalo has a young star in Marshawn Lynch.  He should be able to have a field day against a terrible defense.  Trent Edwards, the Bills starting quarterback, might throw a couple touchdowns utilizing Lee Evans on a big play action strike for a touchdown.  I see Edwards around 230 yards and 2 TDs, but Marshawn Lynch could have his first 100 yard game of the season.  I see him getting 125 yards and 2 TDs.  Fred Jackson might even come in and find paydirt on this terrible defense.

The Rams won't have much luck running the ball on the Bills today.  Marcus Stroud and Kyle Williams aren't easy to run on.  It doesn't help that Steven Jackson has had injury issues with a groin pull.  Jackson might be relied on more heavily due to Trent Green starting at quarterback, but he will be ineffective.  I expect Jackson to finish the day with about 65 yards on 19 carries with no scores.  Trent Green won't do much in his first start of the season.  I don't even know if he'll last the first quarter if he gets hit.  If he does play the whole game expect Green to throw for well under 200 yards and have 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Bills win in a rout 37-13.  Scott Linehan gets relieved of his coaching duties after the game.  Maybe this will be a victory for the Rams in that regaurd.
